Day 2 - 30 Days of Networking: Who to Follow and Who Follows You. #30DNet
July 3, 2009 by Suzi Dafnis
On Twitter, who you follow and who follows you IS your Twitter network.
Today is Day 2 of 30 Days of Networking and we’re looking at how to expand our network through Twitter.
- Who should you follow?
- How do you get more followers?
- Why MORE followers is not necessarily a good thing…
Watch this video to learn more. Today’s Action Tasks are below.
A couple of tips:
- More is not better. A targetted group of followers outweighs lots of followers who don’t care about you or your business
- Make it easy for your customers to follow you by adding your Twitter name to your publications/stationary and asking them to follow
TODAY’S TASKS
- Search for and find at least one new person follow. (Share who that - and maybe why you chose them - is by adding a COMMENT here. Be sure to also tell us YOUR Twitter user name so that WE can follow you.)
- Add your Twitter name to your email footer, or somewhere where others will see it (Mine is @suzidafnis)
Tweet something today! (Remember to use the hash tag #30DNet .)
Two-way conversations are much more fun than broadcasting - so engage in conversation with someone on Twitter today.
Suzi

My twitter name is @mbeedles.
I’ve started following @BrisbaneWoman, the twitter name of Kylie Welsh who runs http://www.brisbanewoman.com, a website for savvy Brisbane women wanting to make connections.
I found Kylie’s twitter page because she on the ‘following’ list of a friend I was already following. This is a good way to make relevant connections.
So far I have added my twitter name to my email footer, to my website and to my blog.
Cheers,
Monique.
@mbeedles
Thanks for the tip Monique - that’s how I found a new person to follow…
I’m following @martinwalsh, who is digital marketing director at Microsoft… as more of our publishing work moves online into digital formats, we need to stay on top of this stuff. I’m also following @tferriss, because I like his quirky approach to productivity stuff - he makes it seem fun!
My twitter name is @freyapurnell, and we also have a separate Twitter for @associationwire.
I have also added my Twitter name to my email signatures…
My Twitter name is http://twitter.com/nhimmelrich
and I just started following http://twitter.com/eddieizzard because i think he’s funny and i’m interested to read what he tweets. He also got a very nice background.
i’ve created my own background but it’s a bit challenging because sometimes it just get lost somehow and it also depends on the size of your screen if you see all that i’ve created. it still needs work i guess. better than plain.
i have been using a link button for ‘follow me on twitter’, ‘linkedin’ and ‘facebook’ on my email signature.
Can I air a ‘grump’ (lol) here too regarding following/following back?
I only follow back Tweeps who of course interest me BUT…
Can I suggest, that if you choose not to follow someone back NEVER DM (Direct Message) them - I have received DMs from people who I am following, because I respect what they have to say, but to receive a little tete a tete communiqué from them via a DM, that you are then unable to respond to in the same way (you can’t DM someone who chooses not to follow you) is so unempowering, that it comes across as being arrogant on the senders part -
So… If you DM someone, first make sure you are following them too - OR if you don’t want the relationship to be that close, keep what you have to say at the appropriate distance, which is out in the open - Keeps the relationship honest + equal + fairer to the followers feelings!
Phew - Think I feel better now ;D
@JourneyJottings
PS Regarding finding new Tweeps - I regularly look to see who my favourite Twitter friends are conversing with, and then follow their friends, which as they become friends links you to more.
I’m now also following those using the #30DNet
Twitter name is on our website, in my email sig + also on Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/JourneyJottings
Hi all,
Am enjoying this #30DNet event. Thank you to all my new friends and ABN members who are following me on Twitter. You all have such interesting bios and websites - go for it.
In the processing of searching around I’ve added a few more to my list. But for the #30DNet I’ve chosen to follow Julia Gillard @JuliaGillardMP. It will be interesting to hear her thoughts and views. I hope to build a relationship so that the ABN & herVoice can table our member issues (see how we go with that goal !). I’m also interested in forming an opinion as she is the leading canditate to be our 1st female Prime Minister.
Ooops. I forgot to tell you my twitter name. Its Julie_Wise. Don’t forget the underscore - there are other Julie Wise’s out on twitter. None are as good as the real one !
I thought the general rule was follow people who follow you (unless it appears to be an unsavoury site following)?
My business is volunteer treasurer software, so when the Connecting Up conference (premier ICT conference for the not-for-profit sector) was on I followed the participants to see what was going on at the conference. I found them via the conference hashtag.
I also periodically search on #notforprofit and #volunteer to find people involved in the community sector. Ooo, now going to follow #30DNet too.
Followed @consciousgovern because he posted an interesting article about volunteering. Of course I also follow followers of friends. Was cool when he followed back, looked at what we had to offer and then tweeted about it.
@neridagill is my twitter name. Tried to get adminbandit to match my business name but ‘admin’ wasn’t allowed. hehe
My twitter name is @Susan_McGrath and I’m now following @McKQuarterly, the business journal of McKinsey & Company. Oh - and did I mention I’m following #30DNet, too??
Today I decided to follow @Ruth_Moncrieff . Ruth is a mentor on the Australian Businesswomen’s MentorNet mentoring program (which is for women business owners) and a thought leader in the areas of leadership and coaching.
My Twitter name is @suzidafnis
Today i @suziecheel decided to follow @Susan_McGrath afterher great 3 questions on the article @suziedafnis tweeted The ABC of business performance – three simple questions to drive your business to new levels!
Where are you now?
Where do you want to be?
How are you going to get there?
I also followed @artsConnect greatresource for artists etal and @fatmummas who alerted me to the Arts Connect
I am looking for sales experts as I want to improve the efficiency of my sales process. So I searched for sales expert in http://www.search.twitter.com. I found someone referring johnjchapin. His philosophy (tweets) on sales were consistent with mine, I also checked his grade out on http://twitter.grader.com/johnjchapin. I am hoping he will include some more links going forward. I like links to additional information.
BTW, I am also receiving consulting from a sales expert as part of the Small Business Solutions - http://www.smallbusinesssolutions.qld.gov.au
Will let you know what I learn.

Well, I started by following @Susan_McGrath because I, too, found her ABC of Business Performance most helpful. Then right under her in my search results was another Susan McGrath who, like me, is a newbie and the kind of dog lover I am interested to have follow me. So I am now also following her. Then, today, I saw Suzi’s reference to @scottemmick, took a look at his twitterpic blog, liked it a lot and am now following him.
Can someone please help me with these 2 questions re. following: 1. Is there some way to have a macro or stock ‘thank you’ note that I can sent to followers without having to re-type it every time? and 2. When I first began getting followers I blocked a couple whom I now want to unblock but can’t remember their Twitter names. Is there a history somewhere that I can go back to to find them?
@DogsSteppingOut
I started to follow Kevin O’Leary since I was googling Dragon’s Den (which is how I found Suzi and this 30 day networking!).
I have my tweets display on my website and there is a follow link on the website too (see http://www.money-magnets.net to see how it works).

Karen

I think I’m following all the ABN members I’ve seen so far, and I’ve learned a little about each of you…
I’ve put my Twitter link on my Facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/magicstars.com.au because a fan asked for it.
I also asked for some feedback to help me decide whether I should continue using http://www.twitter.com/FrancieJones or whether should I change to http://www.twitter.com/FrancesJones or http://twitter.com/magicstars_ Please let me know if you have an opinion… I am yet to publish my business cards, there are so many web links now to put on them… and I’ll put a ‘Follow Me on Twitter’ badge on all my online sites when I decide on the @name. I’ve just put my facebook fan page as my url for now on @FrancieJones which is all an experimental trial…
Aren’t we lucky to have all these social networking sites…
Hi Suzi, please correct what I just wrote and change http://www.twitter.com/FrancesJones to http://www.twitter.com/Frances_Jones Thank you.
Susan, wow you are taking an admirable amount of action. Let yourself be in a learning curve. You are doing great!
Hey Frances,
My quick thoughts. I think use Frances Jones if that is what you usually go by and if you will use that account for business tweets primarily. I know I was unsure at first if Francie and Frances were the same person. I’d reserver the business name and use it as a placeholder to promote your personal tweet account.
As far as links for a business card. Here’s a tip. Set up a page on your site that is your networks and then use that address. e.g. http://www.yoururl.com.au/followfrances.
On that page you can list all the places people can find you. you can then put that one URL on the business card. Hope that makes sense.
Suzi
PS I choose to put my Twitter name only on my card - then use my background to promote my sites/blog.
Thanks so much for your tips Suzi. I’m sure you’ve seen a few business cards… and you’ve met so many business people, so I really appreciate your advice. I’ve come to the same conclusion about my Twitter @name, but it was nice to have a pseudonym for a while! Everyone thinks I’m Francie…. which is quite fun.
I’m located at http://twitter.com/bridalsurvival
I started following @weddex as I’m really interested in developments in wedding businesses in the USA
Tweet name #Crunchdesign.
I am a little behind as I have been away and IPhone seems to be forever running out of battery.
Following #tricyclemag Tricycle MagazineTricycle: The Buddhist Review—Wisdom, Meditation, Community in the states to keep me level.
#aglsucks - for reasons beyond comprehension. We are on a campaign to correct their idea of running a business.
